Aikido protect my students in real life

When we look at this tittle, we might feel that something exciting happening here, such as gang fight, robbery, etc.

As i can say, i'm not the best instructor around here :) but i do try my best to help and teaches aikido classes from 6 days a week, total number of hours spent with my students and my instructors is 12.5 hours per week, I might be only a Nidan (2nd dan) Aikido Chief of Hibana Bushidoo ( Located in Johor Bahru, a city in Malaysia) but i'm happy with my students growth in life, is not the skill, sharpest, nor the technique that i want them to focus, but the peace, harmony and happiness in life i hope them to learn.

So some of the visitor, or people might be saying, my skill are too soft, not that powerful or danger when i teach them, why not i give them not sharp movement to show the power of Aikido? But that is not my concept in teaching for beginner, especailly in children class.

I started a new nursery class for age 4-6 years old recently, so the ideal is to let them play around, learn basic falling and rolling. To let them build their confident, teach them how to seat nicely for even a few minutes is a improvement for them also :) As many of the people in my area don't know what is Aikido, they always thought Aikido is something like taekwendo, karata, wu shu etc, but i always example to some parents we are teaching harmony, to roll and fall, to avoid fighting, no kick no punch no attack :) Yet still many of them don't understand :) But of cause i never give up. Cause i believe time will tell them what Aikido is.

So here is how the storey started, i had a 5year old kids, his name is Syu Mou, which is a very hard to handle kids, my assistant leaders will have great headache when i pass him to them for teaching, he like to disturb others, run around, cry around :) But of cause 8 years of Aikido training, train me a lot, so is not a problem when i handle him. For a few months under my training, i can say he only know irmi tekan, basic falling and simple forward roll and backward roll, which of cause for a 5 years old i don't expect him to be very good in things i teach :) If other parents saw how he roll they will say why like that one hahaha.

But the storey is about this little boy, young little Syu Mou. He stoped his Aikido class last month, due to his study result in school was bad, and his dad don't agree him to learn Aikido, which his mum fully supported behind as she can see her son behaviour improved a bit, A least i help by fecthing him to class so that his mum can relax for 1 hour plus on her own to take care of the new born baby. So both the parents had a agrument for senting him to my nursery class.

So this incident happen last month (August 2012), on one fine day during August, his mum was carry the baby around, when young little Syu Mou fall from the stair case, (by the way he stay in a double storey house). So from the top floor (more then 15 step stair case) he fall down to the ground floor. To his mum suprise, inside her heart she is crying " Die already i can't save my son with a baby in my hand now" But she saw with her own eyes, the young little boy cover his head with his hands, and fall down the stair rolling like what he always did in the dojo. So when he reaches the ground floor, guess what? Yes you are right nothing happen to him, only small scratches at the face area.

So when his dad come back from work and saw the Syu Mou face, he thought his wife beat his son, but when his wife told him, Syu Mou fall from so high to the ground fall he was suprise, he can't believe what he heard, so he search online about Aikido in Malaysia and Singapore. Guess what he found? He found a news about a Sensei who fall from the bike during a car accident and nothing happen to him, all he did was a forward roll :) So i told his mum i know the Sensei :) He is my Sensei Philip Lee.

As what Sensei Philip Lee always told us, we teach Aikido to love, control, harmony and peace. We don't fight, we teach people how to protect themselves, building their confident etc. Who know we can save a life one day when they fall and nothing happen. He once told me, he has students that thank him for his teaching as they fall from the chair, or fall from the floor notning happen and save their body from injury.

Today i can say, thou i'm not as skillful as other, not as powerful as other, not as sharp as other, but i feel what i have done is worth, as we help to save people, as least this young little boy was save from injury. Actually i myself also saw many cases in dojo when my students mop the floor and fall down due to slippery of the mat. But this case was a more serious example of Aikido that protects our life here, So i decided to share with you my story of this young little boy in my nursery class :)

Nice Ukemi

There is always a saying, you must learn how to be beaten then you can be a good martial artist, in aikido we don't just train in self defence, we also learn to be a good ukemi, if our ukemi can improve, improving of our skill will be faster also :) That is what some of us feel, but it might not be the same ideal to some. :) Here are some of the nice uekmi done by the uke who is taking Endo Shihan Ukemi, is very interesting, and the understanding inside it is very deep also :)

Look at the time at 57sec, 105sec, 140sec, 145sec, 156sec, 203sec and 219sec of this clip, is very nice, hopefully you can find more nice ukemi inside this clip also :)

Look at the time at 105sec, 109sec, 120sec, 130sec, 200sec, 214sec and 230sec of this clip :)

Look at the time at 113sec, 117sec, 140sec, 159sec, 211sec, 220sec and 240sec of this clip :)

Sorry if the time i type was a bit out, cause the movement is a bit too fast, and maybe there are more things you enjoy inside these clip but i didn't put in the time also :)

50th All Japan Aikido Demo 2012

For those aikido lover here are some of the clip found in youtube, all japan demo, sorry as there are too many clip and link so i only post some to share :)

Wonderful 2012 for Hibana Bushidoo

Is a challenging year for me in 2012, the assistant that i train for so many years had gone to KL to study, hoping that she will be back to JB after 4 years of study. There are people coming and leaving the dojo, some due to busy of work, busy of study, training method that don't suit them and so on and on, But is ok as i know this life is not an easy one for me. Since i chose to set up a dojo i'll try my best to manage it :)

The closeure of Taman Gaya Dojo was a set back, thou it was a small class with only 5 students but at least is a class that have student of passion :) So the students have to move to my HQ to train with me on Wednesday 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Thou the number of students drop to 3 person on wednesday but is ok, we can start all over again. June was a pressure month for me. As permas dojo had most of the indian training, but is their last month of training with me as they are moving back to India back with their family :) So the numbers of students drop again, from the starting of 11 when i help to manage increase to 22, now back to 14 :)

But overall is a fruitful year, as we already hit the target of min 2 Aikido demo per year, we have reach 6 demo this year and a new coming might be coming up on August for a dinner event. Thou all is a FOC event but it help to train the student reflex and courage during the demo. I'm helping to manage Pontain Dojo starting of July also, another new challenge coming in.

My students have make a good progress in their life and Aikido also, 2 become a stuntmen for a hollywood movie last month, one of them manage to use some Aikido teaching in his security guard seminar, promotion of new assitant leader so that they can learn to teach at least once a month and i can have some personal time to rest also :)

My 1st time oversea visit with Sensei Philip and be his uke for his oversea seminar in Indonesia, manage to make new friends and meet some old friends over there. Always having oversea guest instructor visit, Cheif Instructor Agus from Batam Aikido Club one of our friend affiliated under Aikido Shinju-kai :)

Overall is a wonderful year we have in 2012, thou is only July and maybe is too early to say is a wonderful 2012, but i'm happy cause we are moving to a new HQ, the permanent place for Hibana Bushidoo. My dream of having a own permanent HQ with full of painting as a art gallery will come true soon :)

For lady to be alert if things happen

I found this picture in facebook and i feel is very useful for lady, please take a look and share around with your friends :)

My trip with Sensei Philip Lee to Indonesia

It was my 1st time following Sensei Philip Lee for an oversea Aikido Seminar. Is the 2nd time Sensei Philip asks me to follow him for an oversea trip, finally after all the arrangement of the dojos I manage to take some off days and fly over together with Sensei.

During the seminar I met Haris Sensei Chief Instructor of Aikido Shinkenryukai Indonesia and also one of my old aikido friends Agus Chief Instructor of Batam Aikido Club. Together with Sensei Philip Lee and me it seen to be like a small gathering of oversea affiliated Chief Instructor gathering together to train and learn from our mother dojo Aikido Shinju-kai Singapore.

It was my 1st time been involved in oversea grading and to be part of the grading panel over there. Many things to be learn from the oversea grading and seminar. The culture, the training style, grading style and etc. is different from each of our country. Is my 1st time seeing so many students going for grading at one time, imagine 40 plus student going for 6th and 5th kyu. It might be normal for our Mother Dojo Aikido Shinju-kai, but is a big number for us here in Malaysia.

The weather was wonderful at Bandung, so cooling and nice. It was only 28 degree Celsius in the day time. The students are very friendly and they share with me about the places of interest over there and where we should visit if we are to come over for holiday. The local food was good just a bit sweet to me, but overall is nice. Never forget about the traffic jam, Bandung will have heavy traffic jam during the weekend and Jarkata will have heavy traffic jam during weekday.
The students are very friendly to us, sometime we have small gathering with them after dinner for a cup of coffee to talk and Sensei Philip Lee share his Aikido knowledge to them, I’m happy to be around to hear the knowledge he share with us. The students even visit us during our last day of trip when we are preparing to head for our way home; they met us at the café for breakfast during their working hour.

Some of the night I went out with Haris Sensei and Instructor Agus to have our small talk at 7/11, we talk about how we manage our Aikido school, what are the best ways to attract students, and what are the problems we faced in our country when we set up a dojo, how we manage it and how we hope to be like Sensei Philip Lee been a full time involved in doing Aikido one day.

During our last day we had a morning class at 7:00am for this company call Indika, 90% of the students are from the body guard department. Training with body guard is a totally different class like what we use to have for our training, most of them are trained under other martial art back ground so their way of catching and ukemi might be a bit different and a bit hard to control, lucky I manage to handle my uke well. Of cause everyone was impress by how Sensei Philip Lee present aikido to the management and I’m very lucky and proud to be his uke for most of the class during this trip.

It was a wonderful learning trip for me; really need to thank Sensei Philip Lee for asking me over for this seminar, I manage to make new friends and open my mind bigger and see the world of Aikido in another view.

Best regard,
Bryan Loi (Hibana Bushidoo Chief Instructor)

Adding in the Zen to the Dojo

Recently i got a famous calligarhper in KL to write me the word Aikido, it look super nice, and of cause the marker price of the words also very nice :) I stare for more then 30 min when i go this piece of word, after frame it up, i put it in the dojo. The words show me the calligarpher use the correct stroke and the amount of Ki he use in this words really impress me a lot. As i know O-sensei started to learn calligarphy as it breathing method help in martial art also. Btw O-sensei learn his calligarphy knowledge from Abe shihan if i'm not wrong, say to say Abe shihan pass away last year. He was one of the very famous calligarhper in Japan.

So i decided to get more calligarphy as collection and to add in more Zen to the dojo, here are some of the calligarphy already completed and ready to be hang in the dojo, and some of the calligarpy are still under process of doing. Actually price of calligarphy depend on both buyer and seller also, as i heard ppl buy from the street and no one know the value, in the end the art was sold for Million also.

That is why i don't really mind spending the money in art for Dojo, cause art work and martial art to me is the same, both are so priceless and precious in life. Here are some of the art work i'm going to present you in the dojo soon :) Of cause we will add in some oil painting someday later :)
