Aikido protect my students in real life

When we look at this tittle, we might feel that something exciting happening here, such as gang fight, robbery, etc.

As i can say, i'm not the best instructor around here :) but i do try my best to help and teaches aikido classes from 6 days a week, total number of hours spent with my students and my instructors is 12.5 hours per week, I might be only a Nidan (2nd dan) Aikido Chief of Hibana Bushidoo ( Located in Johor Bahru, a city in Malaysia) but i'm happy with my students growth in life, is not the skill, sharpest, nor the technique that i want them to focus, but the peace, harmony and happiness in life i hope them to learn.

So some of the visitor, or people might be saying, my skill are too soft, not that powerful or danger when i teach them, why not i give them not sharp movement to show the power of Aikido? But that is not my concept in teaching for beginner, especailly in children class.

I started a new nursery class for age 4-6 years old recently, so the ideal is to let them play around, learn basic falling and rolling. To let them build their confident, teach them how to seat nicely for even a few minutes is a improvement for them also :) As many of the people in my area don't know what is Aikido, they always thought Aikido is something like taekwendo, karata, wu shu etc, but i always example to some parents we are teaching harmony, to roll and fall, to avoid fighting, no kick no punch no attack :) Yet still many of them don't understand :) But of cause i never give up. Cause i believe time will tell them what Aikido is.

So here is how the storey started, i had a 5year old kids, his name is Syu Mou, which is a very hard to handle kids, my assistant leaders will have great headache when i pass him to them for teaching, he like to disturb others, run around, cry around :) But of cause 8 years of Aikido training, train me a lot, so is not a problem when i handle him. For a few months under my training, i can say he only know irmi tekan, basic falling and simple forward roll and backward roll, which of cause for a 5 years old i don't expect him to be very good in things i teach :) If other parents saw how he roll they will say why like that one hahaha.

But the storey is about this little boy, young little Syu Mou. He stoped his Aikido class last month, due to his study result in school was bad, and his dad don't agree him to learn Aikido, which his mum fully supported behind as she can see her son behaviour improved a bit, A least i help by fecthing him to class so that his mum can relax for 1 hour plus on her own to take care of the new born baby. So both the parents had a agrument for senting him to my nursery class.

So this incident happen last month (August 2012), on one fine day during August, his mum was carry the baby around, when young little Syu Mou fall from the stair case, (by the way he stay in a double storey house). So from the top floor (more then 15 step stair case) he fall down to the ground floor. To his mum suprise, inside her heart she is crying " Die already i can't save my son with a baby in my hand now" But she saw with her own eyes, the young little boy cover his head with his hands, and fall down the stair rolling like what he always did in the dojo. So when he reaches the ground floor, guess what? Yes you are right nothing happen to him, only small scratches at the face area.

So when his dad come back from work and saw the Syu Mou face, he thought his wife beat his son, but when his wife told him, Syu Mou fall from so high to the ground fall he was suprise, he can't believe what he heard, so he search online about Aikido in Malaysia and Singapore. Guess what he found? He found a news about a Sensei who fall from the bike during a car accident and nothing happen to him, all he did was a forward roll :) So i told his mum i know the Sensei :) He is my Sensei Philip Lee.

As what Sensei Philip Lee always told us, we teach Aikido to love, control, harmony and peace. We don't fight, we teach people how to protect themselves, building their confident etc. Who know we can save a life one day when they fall and nothing happen. He once told me, he has students that thank him for his teaching as they fall from the chair, or fall from the floor notning happen and save their body from injury.

Today i can say, thou i'm not as skillful as other, not as powerful as other, not as sharp as other, but i feel what i have done is worth, as we help to save people, as least this young little boy was save from injury. Actually i myself also saw many cases in dojo when my students mop the floor and fall down due to slippery of the mat. But this case was a more serious example of Aikido that protects our life here, So i decided to share with you my story of this young little boy in my nursery class :)
